Hospital personnel localization system by Active RFID

Personnel traceability by using an Active RFID system

Personnel traceability by using an Active RFID system

This application's benefits:

  • Immediately localization of all doctors (RTLS based in Active RFID)
  • Emergency button
  • There’s no limit of users neither delimited zones
  • Multireading system, allow to identify more than one tag at the same time
  • Lost detection or not use of the RFID wristband tag

This solution has been carried out by one of Kimaldi’s partner. The solution pretends all hospital personnel are localized and when its necessary can receive help in an emergency situation.

The solution is based in Active RFID technology to identify the personnel through a wristband tag, which also has an emergency button.

There’s no limit of delimited zones to distinguish, neither about users. Besides, the systems is prepared to make a multireading, that is, each RFID reader can identify more than a tag at the same time.

The alarms received in a local way, by optical or acoustic signals, or in a remote way, by telephone, pc, etc. can be picked up in several places and using different communication channels at the same time.

TRACEABILITY SYSTEM (RTLS) OF SANITARY PERSONNEL

The project consists in designing a localization system (Real-Time Location System) for the personnel of a psychiatric hospital in delimited zones.

Specifically, 11 localization zones have been defined. Inside any of these zones, the system user can press the button tag and be identified individually.

The identification is carried out by a RFID wristband tag, worn by the personnel all the time, which sends the data when is asked by a RFID reader. The tag is encoded by a unique ID, which allows the readings of the different RFID Tags are associated to the individual identification.

Readers identify tag when users press the alarm button. This alarm signal is taken to the control software which shows the tag information in the screen (user name and other data considered outstanding), and its localization.

Besides, the system has an advanced security system which identifies the users aren’t wearing the wristband and localize them in the control enclosure.

The alarm is beeped by an acoustic and visual signal and it is picked up in a checkpoint (as many as necessary). In the checkpoint there’s a pc which receives the alert signal. In the manage program the alarm is visualized in three different ways: in a control panel, in a history and in a synoptic. It’s possible to capture two views in the screen, as a double screen.

  • In the synoptic view, the identification accuracy depends on the localization zone where the subject is, his situation, number of readers installed, etc.
  • The panel view shows unequivocally the zone from where the alarm comes.
  • The third view, where all the alarms sent are listed in a history, shows the user who sent each alarm, date and time and localization zone.

The emergency signals must be “accepted” in the software indicating automatically date and time of acceptance, just as the user who sends the alarm. All this information remains in the software in order to be processed when it’s necessary. So, it’s important that all users are registered individually in the application.

The alarm communication from RFID Readers to processing equipments (PC’s) will carry out in WiFi connection. For that, each reader will have an Ethernet/WiFi converter and the building must be covered in a convenient way due to the alarm can arrive to the server with no problem.

Any terminal (including PDA’s) connected to the system receives the same information at the same time.
The alarm can be accepted from any terminal. When this happens, the alarm disappears of the current view and is showed in the history. The user who has accepted the alarm is registered, and also are the time and date.

The system is completely reliable, effective and scalable in all its aspects: users, localization zones, alert registers, etc. This makes it a safety system and very flexible, so allows to combine other access control and time&attendance control system.
