Electronic prescription management through magnetic stripe Readers

Electronic prescription is a system growing in Spain and allows speeding up request and issuing of prescriptions in public sanity.

With Electronic prescription, paper issuing will disappear gradually. This will speed up its management and will save bureaucratic tasks to the sanity centres employees and also to patients.

Electronic prescription working is very easy. Sanitary employees issue the electronic prescription through a software management and give to patients their medication plan, where necessary information will be included in order to follow the correctly treatment (medicine, dose and frequency, and time planned).

When the patient goes to the chemist’s gives his sanitary card and the medication plan. The chemist consults the electronic prescriptions through the software and gives the medicine to the patient with security and confidentiality.

INTRODUCING OF THE ELECTRONIC PRESCRIPTION THROUGH MAGNETIC STRIPE READERS

This application installs a USB magnetic stripe reader MSR 206 in several chemists’ with which can read the information stored in the sanitary card.

These magnetic stripe readers work with pharmaceutical manager software, which allows following the patient, its prescriptions and treatments.

Patient identification data are read from the sanitary card with the magnetic stripe reader and are sent, with the medication plan, through a secure communication channel to the Health Service of the Autonomous Community, which immediately sends back patient’s medication issued by the medical personnel.

So, managing Electronic prescriptions is done in a reliable and secure way for all agents which take part in the procedure, both for patients and for sanitary and chemists’ personnel.
